DNS stands for Domain Name System. It is like the phone book of the internet: it changes easy-to-remember names such as google.com into IP addresses such as 142.250.190.14, which computers use to find the correct server.
When you type a website address into your browser, your device first checks its local DNS cache. If it does not already know the matching IP address, it sends a request to a DNS resolver, usually provided by your internet service provider or configured by your organisation.
The resolver searches through the DNS hierarchy. It may contact a root server, the relevant top-level-domain server—such as .com, .org, or .co.ls—and finally the authoritative DNS server that stores the domain's actual records. The result points your request to the correct website, mail server, or other service.
